About

The Poor Knights is located just over 20 km off the Tutukaka coast in Northland. The Poor Knights are made up of dozens of islands and protruding rocks and countless pinnacles that create perfect diving conditions. The Poor Knights are New Zealand's oldest marine reserve and often regarded as the best dive site in the country and one of the best sites in the world. Dive sites range from shallow reefs to walls that drop further than 60 meters. The dive sites are ideal for divers of all levels, from beginner to seasoned divers, some sites during the late summer months are known to attract rare tropical species like Whale Sharks, Turtles, Tuna and other ocean-going pelagics. It is common to see schooling Blue Maomao, schooling Demoiselles, Snapper, Kingfish, Eagle Rays, Sting Rays, Crayfish and Octopus Typically leave from Tutukaka Marina. The Trip is approximately 30 - 45 minutes depending on the conditions

Minimum Equipment Requirements

  • Mask, snorkel, fins, boots
  • Exposure protection
  • Quick release weight system
  • Scuba Unit: BCD, regulator, alternate air source, submersible pressure gauge (SPG), dive computer.
  • 2 x scuba cylinders & weights
  • Surface marker Buoy
  • Knife/cutting device (not available for hire)
  • Torch (mandatory at night / Optional for day)

Certification requirements

This trip is suitable for certified Open Water Divers through to Technical Open circuit and Rebreather Divers

Gear Rental

We have gear rental options. You may collect it from the dive center after 3.30pm on the day prior to your rental date, and you may return it before 10.00 am on the day after your rental date. You will need to provide the size of the equipment you want or allow enough time to be fitted during the pick-up. It is your responsibility to collect/return the gear to the dive center within the stated times and during work opening hours.

What To Bring

In addition to the dive equipment specified above you will need to bring your own food, water, sunscreen and hat.

Note

  • All trips are weather permitting and they require a minimum number to run. We reserve the right to cancel or change the destination of any trip to ensure customer and staff safety.
  • Ensure you bring appropriate certification cards for approved boarding as refusal may offend.
  • Trip does not include guided dives. If you require a dive guide, please contact us well in advance. (Charges apply)
  • Boat Risk Disclosure must be signed before departure.
  • All divers must have a dive computer, cutting device and Surface Marker Buoy
  • The charter price does not include any equipment. If you have not booked rental equipment yet, please get in touch to arrange. You will need to pick up any rental equipment from the store the day before your trip.

Cancellation

  • All of our trips are reliant upon suitable weather and minimum numbers. We'll notify you the day before should we need to make any changes to the destination or to cancel.
  • Trips cancelled by the operator can be refunded or rescheduled to a later date.
  • There are no refunds for client cancellations within 7 days of the trip.
